If Aparthotel CASTLE is your choice for a summer vacation you will be able to walk about the legendary mountain and may be even follow the steps of the mythical singer Orpheus. During the summer season all the guests of the hotel will be offered the following excursions and entertainments YAGODINSKA CAVE /there are about 140 caves and karst forms founded in the district of Iagodinska Cave. The cave is electricivated and passable/. The Yagodinska Cave is the *pearl in the crown* of the Rhodopi Mountains. It is situated near Buynovska River and is a part of the unique Karst of Buynovsko Gorge. It is 10 km long and 5 stories tall, with many labyrinths and abysses inside. Electric lights make the mysterious formations: draperies, pipe-like stalactites, cave pearls, *leopard*s skin* and hanging stalactone visible along with many others. An iron staircase leads to a hall named *Razlomna* where the real bottom of the underground river is covered with huge blocks. The upper floor was well-known to ancient Eneoloithic inhabitants /14-13 century before Christ/, signs from them were found near the 30 meters abyss. If you wish you can visit the eneoloithic dwellings, which are situated 10 min from the artificial entrance or the *Devil*s bridge* /rock formation/.................................45 km BACHKOVO MONASTERY Bachkovo monastery ranks second only to Rila monastery both with regard to size, and architectural significance. It is situated 30 km. from Plovdiv in Bachkovo village. According to the historians it was founded during Byzantine slavery in 1083. Its founders are two Georgian brothers - Grigorii and Apasii Bakuriani. In his fiefs, Grigorii built a monastery, devoted to the woman-mother and called it Petrichki. The monastery had a rapid history. It was attacked and robbed more than once. Its bloom was during the 13th century, more precisely during the reign of Tzar Ivan Alexander /the second church-donor of the monastery/. An important period for the monastery was the 14th century. Regarding the architecture, the monastery presents as joined rectangular buildings that form an enormous inner yard, in which are located the churches: St. Trinity, St. Archangels and St. Nikola. The older church , St. Archangels, is a basilica, uni-domed building with overarches.................................48 km DEVIL*S THROAT CAVE One of the phenomena in the Trigrad Gorge is the Dyavolskoto Garlo /Devil*s Throat/ abyss cave. An impressive cave hall is reached along an artificially dug tunnel /150 m/. A winding steep cement staircase leads from the hall to the natural entrance of the cave. While climbing, the visitor can see one of the highest underground waterfalls in Europe /42 m/. There is a legend from the Thracian times that in order to become immortal the chieftains were thrown inside. Hundreds of years passed and people believed in veneration that the entrance to the Outer world was here, the road to Immortality. In honour of their Gods of the Underworld the people offered as a sacrifice the most beautiful and eminent maids in order to appease the Evil Forces. Local people believe that whatever went into the underground labyrinth of the cave would never come out. Dyavolskoto Garlo is open for visitors throuout the whole year................................47 km PERPERIKON In the eastern Rhodopi Mountain, near the town of Kurdzhali, on a rocky summit, is located the famous sanctuary and castle of the Thracians - Perperikon. The complex had been used already during 5-4 millennia before Christ. In the 10th-7th centuries B.C., when the complex was most intensively used, thousands of monuments, a tomb and even a system of drains were cut out of the rock. There are places where men and animals were sacrified. Very interesting is also the Kings Palace that is supposed to lay in 10 000 square meters. For the time being 30 of about 60 rooms of the palace, hewn into the rocks, have been found. The walls of the complex are stone blocks which are 2.8 meters thick. The archeologists hope that they*ll find proof that Perperikon was Dionysus*s temple. Today there is an art-festival /on 21st June/ which aims is to maintain the extensive variety of our cultural heritage..................................110 km VILLAGE OF SHIROKA LUKA If you want to plunge into the atmosphere of the past times, see the sunrise, wake up at first cock-crow, then visit some of the villages in the Rhodopi Mountain. At the foot of the east-west mountainside of the Perelishki part of the Western Rhodopi Mountain and the south-western folds of Chernatitsa is tucked away the village of Shiroka Luka. It is declared as an architectural and ethnographic reserve. The village is located 24 kilometers from Smolyan and 5 kilometers from Pamporovo. Visiting this village, which has preserved the Bulgarian spirit, you can submerge yourself into the way of life of the Bulgarians a century ago. You will see Rhodopi Mountain just as it was during the Revival period. The houses which model everything about the past lifestyle, include the Zgurovski konak, where is located the Ethnographic Museum, the Kaladjiiska house, Grigorovska and Bogdanovska houses.
